After a year hiatus  Power Boat Racing returns to the Alabama Gulf Coast. “Over the years, we’ve had races sanctioned by SBI, OSS and APBA. This year we’ve invited OPA – The Offshore Powerboat Association from the East Coast and POPRA – Pacific Offshore Racing Association from the West Coast. Between these two organizations, we expect anywhere from 40 to 60 boats from all across the United States to race in Orange Beach this October 12 – 17,2010″ Said Gary Nichols. Gary was the founder and President of the Gulf Coast Powerboat Racing Association and raced for several years, but these days he claims to only be “involved” in racing. This year  the biggest racing organization in the country will be coming to town and is part of the Geico Offshore Racing Series and it will be televised about a month after the race.

This will be OPA’s and POPRA’s end of year World Championship Races, which means that instead of just a weekend event, this will be a two race World Championship format that will have the boats in town for a whole week. Teams will start arriving on Monday and Tuesday and practice on Wednesday. Then the first day of racing will be on Thursday. On Friday there will be a poker run with racers and fans participating, then again on Saturday the boats will test in order to get ready for the big finale on Sunday.

This event is your chance to see some of the fastest powerboats in the world compete on the liquid race course of the Gulf of Mexico.  Powerboat racing is growing rapidly in popularity, attracting people from all over the world.  Thunder is best viewed from one of the many Gulf-front condos and house balconies, but you can also get the feeling of the race from the beach as well.  Don’t miss out on this display of pure horsepower.
