Everyone loves to catch triggerfish!

Orange Beach/Gulf Shores, Alabama - April 6, 2013 - On this half day six-hour charter fishing trip, we had to Castillo family who is in town from Mobile, Alabama.  As it worked out there was three daughters on board for this trip.  It just so happened to be Reagan’s birthday who is the youngest child who I believe had more fun than any six people I know!  We headed offshore some 15 miles per for spot where the fishing was a little slow. Then moved on offshore a little further to the east and fountain triggers, Vermilion snapper, white snapper and one big old hungry shark.

To say that this family love to fish would be a pure understatement. I don’t think any of all missed a single drop at any point during the half-day trip and I really can’t remember a group that had as much fun as they did.  At the conclusion of the trip while Drew was cleaning fish, Reagan would have nothing less than for the Capt. and crew in any bystander to sing happy birthday to her.  It was one of those days with one of those groups that you wish happened every day.  gauging by the amount of fun the three daughters had on the fishing trip I am certain that Melissa and Sean will be back soon!

Triggerfish are biting in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach with captain Johnny Greene on the Intimidator

Orange Beach, AL - The fishing in the winter time off of the coast of Orange Beach has long been a favorite of many savvy anglers.  This time of year you will not have long lines, traffic jams or Mosquito’s but the fishing is as good as it can get.  You might have to be a little flexible on the weather but this winter has been very mild and sea conditions are calm for the most part

One of my longtime favorite types of fish to catch has always been triggerfish and I must admit the 6 month closure last year was especially hard for me.  Yes it hurt not having them available to my customers but I truly love to catch and eat them.  However, the trade-off of the fishery closure far outweighs the desire to catch.

For years triggerfish were considered a trash fish mainly because people did not know how to clean them.  Since I started fishing in the 80′s we have always kept them and they have always been one if my most favorite fish to eat.  Although they are admittedly odd-looking with some nasty looking jagged teeth used to eat barnacles among other things, they have a firm white meat that you can bake, broil, blacken or my personal favorite… Fried!  Well as you can imagine I love everything fried and this is my favorite!

Have you ever wondered where they got their name from?  Well I don’t know if anyone really knows but the one I believe is how to get that big spike of a fin to lie down on top of its head.  There is a small fin right behind the big one that must move first, and then the big one will fall back just like a trigger.

So they next time you catch a trigger you have the inside information on some of the best eating around!  Besides, I will always take a couple of pieces home, if you’re still not convinced!

The winter time is “the” time for the serious fishermen to get out enjoy some great action. This is a cool time of year that some savvy anglers wait for all year as fishing has moved in to a winter time pattern a long on the Alabama Gulf Coast. The water temperature has fallen into the low 60 degree range and most of the seasonal bait fish are gone offshore to warmer waters.

If you like the simple 4 hour trolling trips, between now and Christmas is the time that you can have some good luck with the big schools of redfish as the move up on the beach to spawn. You can also catch other fish but these fish are big and fun!

The 6 hour trips are year-round the most popular trip that we offer for families and friends that are here on vacation. These fishing trips offer lots of diversity and are long enough trips to offer you some great action. In the winter time 6 hour trips will [Read more...]

The fall time weather patterns have finally arrived at the beach. The warm summer sun has left the Gulf of Mexico waters warm even as the weather starts to cool off and the days become shorter.  As the big schools of bait fish push further offshore this, it will make for some fantastic action and I cannot think of a better time to run a 4 hour fishing charter for Spanish and King mackerel.  This is a very relaxed type of fishing that is kid friendly yet has enough action to keep everyone involved.  Also, you may find big schools of bull redfish as [Read more...]

The 2012 gag grouper season ended on October 31st and by our accounts it was a huge success. While we don’t catch as many gag’s as they do in other places, Orange Beach is becoming more of a target destination for this recovering fishery.

Typically speaking we may not catch the numbers of groupers that they might in other places but the ones we catch ate usually large and put up a heck of a fight! The fish can grow up to 80 pounds but fish over 30 pounds are considered a trophy.

To catch a big one we use different types of live and dead baits to entice one into striking. You must be ready to reel when the fish hits to make sure the circle hook rotates in to the corner of the jaw and then it’s up to you to crank!

Catching Gag Grouper on The Intimidator in Orange BeachThis article was written by Captain Johnny Greene, and was originally featured on www.FishOrangeBeach.com. The original version cna be viewed by clicking here.

With the looming closure for gag grouper just six weeks away now is the time to make plans to go get them on a deep sea charter fishing trip . With the recent passing of hurricane Isaac just to the south of the Orange Beach and Gulf Shores areas the grouper have been very active and has made for some great day trips.

During the fall you may also keep Vermillion snapper, amberjack, scamps and king mackerel which will make for a fine box of fish for you and your buddies to enjoy on your fishing trip.

The fall is absolutely my most favorite time of year to fish. The air starts to cool off in the water temperatures remain warm until early December. Come on let’s go fishing!

Captain Johnny Greene's Intimidator Sportfishing, Gulf Shores & Orange BeachApril 18, 2012 -  Now that spring break 2012 has come and gone for the gulf coast we are a still fishing and the action continues to be good for those anglers. One good time about this time of year is most all of the crowds have cleared out and of town and the fishermen are being rewarded with great catches for a minimal amount of money.

On the 4 hour charters, we have been catching lots of Spanish Mackerel and a few big king mackerel have started to show up. We have been fishing down to the west, just offshore between Orange Beach and the Gulf Shores pier. The Spanish are great eating fish that are fun to catch especially for the kids. The length of the trip seems to be just right for the kids not to loose interest. The trips we have run this spring many people have decided to keep only what they were going to eat that night for dinner which is a good thing to teach the youngsters on the boat that it is [Read more...]
