Gulf Shores, AL – August 27, 2012 – This past weekend, the NCAA Southeastern Conference kicked off the college football season with a family friendly event by transforming the Gulf Shores public beach into a football focused “Fan Zone.” Boasting attractions such as appearances by current SEC coaches such as Nick Saban of the University of Alabama, Gene Chizik of Auburn University, and Les Miles of Louisiana State University. The 2012 SEC BeachFest also featured appearances by legendary coaches Pat Dye, Frank Broyles, Phil Fulmer and Gene Stallings. Festival attendees were treated to photo opportunities and autograph signings with coaches, the National Championship Trophy and school mascots. Other attractions such as the presence of the SEC Coaches Trophy, players clinics for the kids and live music throughout the weekend, visitors were enveloped in an exciting and passionate atmosphere leading up to the first games of the 2012 football season.
Featuring two miniature football fields, one built on the sand and one located in the center of the “Fan Zone,” fans of all ages could run drills and learn fundamental skills from some of college football’s most legendary players and coaches. Fans were tempted into other areas of the Gulf Coast with a multi-day golf tournament hosted by Golf Gulf Shores, a 5K morning race hosted by LA FeetFleet and Alumni parties at local restaurants.
The large Gulf front stage offered attendees evening concerts from the B-52s and Dr. John with the beautiful Gulf of Mexico as the picturesque backdrop. Local acts such as Grayson Caps entertained thousands as they gathered to enjoy the company of fellow SEC football enthusiasts on the sugar white sand beaches of Gulf Shores. The main stage also hosted separate ESPN interviews with Chizik, Miles and Saban allowing fans an up close viewing of their favorite collegiate coaches.
