Shrimp of every description will be parading at the 39th Annual National Shrimp Festival October 7-10 at the Gulf Shores public beach. Kaiser Realty, Inc. is sponsoring Shrimp on Parade benefiting the Christian Service Center, a local organization whose mission is to provide a “hand up” rather than a “hand out” to people in need living in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan.
Twelve whimsical shrimp depicting life on the coast were sculpted by multi-media artist Jan Jones of Magnolia Springs for this event. In addition, three fine art sculptures, “The Spirit of the Gulf”- a mermaid portraying the quiet strength of the people who call the Gulf Coast home; a parrot entitled “Looking for the Lost Shaker of Salt”; and an old fisherman named “Hard Times,” will be included in the collection.
Festival-goers will have the opportunity to contribute as little as $1 to the Christian Service Center at the Kaiser Realty, Inc. booth to be eligible to take one of these adorable crustaceans home. A $2 donation will be asked for the “Spirit of the Gulf,” the parrot “Looking for the Lost Shaker of Salt,” and the old fisherman – “Hard Times.” A drawing will be held Sunday afternoon at the festival site with winners announced. You do not have to be present to win.
Faye Cook, chair of the fundraising committee for the CSC said, “Shrimp on Parade, with their whimsical personalities, fit the overall fun atmosphere of the Shrimp Festival and gives us permission to feel light-hearted again, while the fine-art sculptures are reminiscent of the summer of 2010. These creations are the first Shrimp on Parade which we anticipate will become an annual event at Shrimp Festival.”
The sculptures are on display at the Kaiser Realty, Inc. office on Gulf Shores Parkway during regular office hours.
