Mobile Bay Ferry – Scenic Water Route Across Mobile Bay!

(Fort Morgan,  AL)  True, one reach the white sand beaches of Alabama’s gem cities, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, by turning off I-10 and heading due south.  Why not try shooting an approach from the west for a scenic and safe alternative to asphalt?  The Mobile Bay Ferry runs year-round between the historic Civil War forts that continue as silent guards at the mouth of Mobile Bay:  Fort Gaines and Fort Morgan.

From Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas or other “parts west,” take Exit 4 on I-10, turn right on Alabama State Highway 188.  You’ll go about 20 miles, turn right on Highway 193 and from there it’s 8 miles to Dauphin Island, AL.  When Highway 193 ends (3-way stop and a water tower marks this location), turn left and drive 2 miles to the Mobile Bay Ferry landing.

If you’re visiting the Alabama Gulf Coast and heading west is in your plans,  leave Gulf Shores by turning west on Highway 180 ( also known as Fort Morgan Road and officially the Dixie Graves Parkway) and it’s just about 25 miles to the Mobile Bay Ferry landing  just outside Fort Morgan’s entry point.

One ferry, the Fort Morgan, runs year-round from September 11 to April 30.  Starting May 1st, the Marissa Mae Nicole joins the Fort Morgan in moving cars, trucks, bicycles, motorcycles, passengers and yes!  Seagulls!  The shore birds are often along for the ride, perching on the very peak of the upraised ramp and seemingly enjoying the wind, water and view as much as those paying for the trip!

The Mobile Bay Ferry website has a downloadable ferry schedule which lists fees and times of departure from Fort Morgan and Dauphin Island.  For information contact the Mobile Bay Ferry office at 251.861.3000.

  1. Mobile Bay Ferry website is very helpful — it reminds us of some roadwork on Fort Morgan road that may slow us down a little — give yourself enough time to make this fantastic ferry ride!
